London Olympics 2012 The 2012 London Olympics, or as it is officially called ,“The Games of the XXX Olympiad” are fast approaching.   Despite the usual challenging security and budget concerns, Britain promises to make it’s “third” time hosting the games the biggest and best yet!

While Londoners get ready to welcome athletes from 205 countries around the world, we thought we would take the opportunity to have a look at some of the exciting Olympic venues that will greet them.

The 2012 games will use a mixture of new venues, existing facilities and historic locations & structures, some of them in well-known locations such as Hyde Park and Horse Guards Parade.  Most of the venues have been divided into three zones, the Olympic Zone, the River Zone and the Central Zone but by necessity, some venues are outside the boundaries of Greater London, such as the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy in Dorset which will host the sailing events.  The popular football tournaments will be staged at several grounds around the UK.

The 2012 Summer Olympic Games will be held in London from July 27th to August 12th followed by the 2012 Paralympic Games from August 29th to September 9th. Here is a full schedule of events.

Born in the western foothills of the legendary Black Forest in Germany, he spent the first 12 years of his life tagging along behind his parents as they explored Europe. His first memories are of exploring German castles, and his early childhood education consisted of navigating the Austrian Alps, and mastering equestrian skills at the small sea-side town of Maspalomas, along the Spanish coast. The venues certainly look impressive! My trip to London was in winter – a completely different experience from the one that Olympic spectators will no doubt have. :)

Hi Pola – so true! Although in England (just like Vancouver!) one can never be remotely guaranteed a good stretch of weather. Nonetheless, I think it is going to be an amazing experience for anyone lucky enough to go to the London Games – but they had better be ready to deal with crowds! Thanks so much for sharing your comment!
